“I believe physical education should be focused on nurturing a lifelong love of sport and physical activity and developing skills through positive experiences. With 17 years teaching experience in both the independent and state sectors, I always aim to provide a balance between participation and performance, whilst giving pupils the opportunity to try out a variety of sports and activities in progressive, differentiated lessons that allow pupils to progress at their own pace.
“My pastoral aims are to identify and meet the diverse needs of the children; to create a safe, purposeful and happy atmosphere which encourages and reinforces positive behaviour; to foster positive relationships across the school community; to foster the emotional development of the child; to create a responsive and effective learning environment; to acknowledge and value the achievement of children and to build self-esteem and self-confidence; to develop independence and interdependence; to develop an understanding in the children of how their behaviour impacts upon themselves and others and to support children’s moral and social development.”
Russell is an experienced teacher who joined the profession following a period of employment in football development at a professional football club. He has taught at a number of different schools in London, in both the independent and state sectors. He has been teaching at Bassett since 2014 and is currently both Pastoral, Mental Health and Wellbeing lead and Head of PE and Sport as well as being a member of the Senior Leadership team, both the school’s First Aid coordinator and Educational Visits coordinator.
Russell was born and raised in South West London. He has been a keen sportsman since an early age, is an avid supporter of Fulham Football Club and enjoys watching many sports events particularly the Six Nations Rugby and the Cricket World Cup. Aside from sport, his main passion in life is music and although his days of being in a band and releasing records are long gone, he loves nothing more than attempting to play Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen songs, among many other favourites, on his trusted Gibson SG.
