Bassett House is proud to be a fully co-educational prep school, welcoming all genders together from Nursery right through to Year 6. From their very first day with us, children learn, play and grow up alongside one another – not as separate streams that happen to share a building, but as one community, in one classroom, throughout their whole Bassett House journey.
How co-education works at Bassett House
Every class at Bassett House is mixed, from our youngest Nursery children through to our oldest Year 6 pupils preparing for 11+. Pupils sit together, are taught together, and are given exactly the same opportunities – academically, in sport, in the arts and in every club on offer. Teachers regularly use mixed-gender group work and paired learning, because we’ve found that children genuinely learn from each other, both academically and socially, when they’re given the chance to.
This isn’t something we bolt on for a single lesson or activity – it’s simply how the school day works, every day, at every stage.
Why we believe in co-education
We believe a co-educational environment prepares children more completely for the world they’re growing up into – one where they’ll go on to secondary school, university and working life alongside people of every background and gender. Learning to collaborate, compete fairly, and build genuine friendships across a mixed group from the age of two gives children a head start on confidence and empathy that a single-sex environment simply can’t replicate in the same way.
At Bassett House, this sits alongside our wider belief that academic excellence and kindness are not mutually exclusive. A co-educational classroom, done well, isn’t a compromise between the two – it’s part of how we deliver both.
Co-education and pastoral care
Our co-educational approach is woven into the same pastoral structures that support every child at Bassett House. Our house system brings students together in mixed teams, building teamwork and a healthy competitive spirit across the whole school. Our buddy system pairs older children with younger ones – regardless of gender – so that every new starter has a familiar, friendly face to turn to.
