Spring Chickens!
As part of our learning about life cycles, the children at Bassett House Nursery were delighted to receive a special delivery of eggs, which were carefully placed into an incubator within the nursery. Over the course of the week, the children observed the incubation process, learning about warmth, care and the conditions needed for new life to grow.
The excitement grew each day as we waited patiently for the eggs to hatch, and then suddenly we have ten new yellow furry members of the nursery!
The children have shown exceptional kindness and responsibility while handling the chicks. With gentle hands, they have been learning how to hold them safely, understanding what they eat, how they drink, and what they need to grow healthy and strong. This experience has supported discussions around empathy, care, respect for living things, and the importance of responsibility.
To ensure the chicks’ wellbeing, we also set up our very own Bassett House Chick Cam, allowing staff to carefully monitor them throughout the day. The children have also loved being able to observe the chicks closely, checking in on their progress and noticing how much they change and grow each day.
In the coming days, we will continue to care for the chicks before returning them to Happy Chicks, who will responsibly re-home them. Until then, the halls are full of little ‘cheeps’… our first little shoots of spring.
