Introduction: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hallmark of Bassett House School?

Bassett House School is above all a happy school. We believe that only if a child is happy and actively wants to come to school will his or her potential in the widest sense be maximised. Within a friendly but nevertheless structured and disciplined academic environment, the school aims to bring out the best in its children. Results in the entrance examinations to the leading London preparatory schools and senior schools have consistently been excellent.

Why is Bassett House so successful?

Mainly because of its happy yet purposeful atmosphere... but partly also because the school does not stint to obtain the very best staff and to support them with the very best in resources.

Is there an entrance test?

We do not believe in testing very young children. Consequently there is no entrance test for children entering the Den (at age 3) or Lower 1 (at age 4); parents are however expected to inform the school of any factors affecting their child which might cause difficulties with his or her education.

For children seeking an occasional place at the school in any of the forms above Lower 1 (Reception), the school makes an assessment to determine the child's attainment, particularly in mathematics and literacy. A place will be offered if the results of these assessments demonstrate that the child will be happy and successful in the relevant year group. All admissions are subject to the school's registration and entry procedures and are at the headmistress's discretion. There is usually a waiting list.

How do we know if Bassett House School is right for our child?

It is essential you visit any school you are considering for your child. As you visit Bassett House - and other schools - you will be able to see the children at work and play and, vitally, to gauge the atmosphere.

You should also talk to your friends and other people about the schools you are considering. Bassett House, and its sister schools Orchard House in Chiswick and Prospect House in Putney, are generally well known to parents and to the senior schools to which their children move when they leave Bassett House.

How do we arrange to visit the school?

The headmistress regularly shows the school to prospective parents and these visits afford a perfect opportunity to ask her – or the children! – any questions that may occur to you.
Visits may be arranged through the school office by telephoning 020 8969 0313 or e-mailing info@bassetths.org.uk.

Can we register our child before visiting the school?

No, you must visit the school first. (The school will permit registration in advance of a visit only in exceptional circumstances.)
